Wendy A. Henderson, PhD, FAAN, FAASLD, is a Professor of Medicine and Nursing at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Henderson obtained her PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, where she was also a Clinical and Translational Science Institute Fellow. She completed a Patient Safety Fellowship, through the Jewish Healthcare Foundation and joined the Intramural Program of NIH as a Staff Scientist in 2007. After completing postdoctoral immuno-genetic training at the NIH in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutritional Disorders, Dr. Henderson was appointed as an Assistant Clinical Investigator in 2009 and then was appointed as a Lab Chief in the NIH Division of Intramural Research in 2011. She founded and led a Clinical and Translational Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in the Intramural Program of NIH (2009-2019) and served as a consultant on the NIH medical staff for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition.
As a principal investigator on multiple funded studies, Dr. Henderson’s science focuses on Brain-Gut-Liver Microbiota Axis and chronic effects of stress on intestinal health across the lifespan in human, murine, and cellular models. Dr. Henderson is an inventor on multiple patents and licensed technologies. She has served as a member of the NIH Women Scientist Advisors Committee, on the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act, and current chair of the AASLD Research Awards Committee. Among other awards, Dr. Henderson has received Director’s Awards from the NIH in Innovation, Leadership, and Diversity.
