NAMED AND DONOR-DIRECTED FUNDS

American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) Foundation’s Named Funds are established by individuals and families to commemorate a loved one, honor a colleague, or dedicate resources towards Foundation initiatives for which they seek to support in a significant way.

These Funds are critical to the Foundation’s work to support the research and training programs that will help lead to a brighter, healthier tomorrow for the millions of people impacted by liver disease.

NAMED AND DONOR-DIRECTED RESEARCH AWARDS

THE ANNA S. LOK ADVANCED/TRANSPLANT HEPATOLOGY FELLOW AWARD

Dr. Anna S. Lok

Established in 2018 by Dr. Anna S. Lok, a luminary in the field of hepatology and champion of early-career training. This award is made each year to the most outstanding applicant for the AASLD Foundation’s Advanced/Transplant Hepatology Fellow Award program and provides research seed funding to support the awardee’s critical first year in academic hepatology.

The Gupta Family PILOT AWARD FOR Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) RESEARCH

Dr. Lalit and Mrs. Anuhba Gupta

Established in 2018 by Dr. Lalit and Mrs. Anuhba Gupta, the Gupta Family Pilot Award in PSC Research supports innovative research projects focused on the etiology and/or pathogenesis of Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis – a rare liver disease with no known cause or cure. With the support of this award, investigators can explore high-risk, high-reward ideas or methods that may someday transform the understanding of and treatment for PSC.

THE FRANK J. TUSA PILOT AWARD FOR RESEARCH IN HEPATIC ENCEPHALOPATHY (HE)

Established in 2023 by Dr. Jacqueline Tusa in memory of her husband, Frank, this award seeks to improve outcomes for people living with Hepatic Encephalopathy, a devastating brain dysfunction caused by liver disease. Through this award, investigators can explore new interventions that have the potential to improve the quality of life, disease management, or treatment options for patients with HE.

The Autoimmune Liver Diseases Exploratory Research Award

The Autoimmune Liver Diseases Exploratory Research Award was created in 2016 to ignite new approaches that could broaden our understanding of autoimmune liver diseases such as primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), and autoimmune hepatitis. This award provides seed funding to support small-scale exploratory studies, allowing investigators to test innovative ideas and gain insight into potential new research pathways.

NAMED TRANSPLANT HEPATOLOGY FELLOW AWARDS

AASLD Foundation’s Advanced/Transplant Hepatology Fellow Awards support travel and career development opportunities for trainees pursuing advanced education focused on the care of patients with advanced liver disease and liver transplant recipients.

SPECIAL FUNDS

THE AUTOIMMUNE HEPATITIS RESEARCH FUND

This fund, made possible by generous donors who share the Foundation’s vision to prevent and cure liver disease, was established to stimulate research in autoimmune hepatitis – a rare chronic liver disease in which your immune system mistakenly attacks your healthy liver cells.  Since 2018, this fund has provided over $400,000 for autoimmune hepatitis research that will ultimately lead to a better understanding of disease mechanisms, new diagnostics, better treatment approaches, and cures.

The Hugo Rosen Fund

This fund was established in honor of the late Dr. Hugo Rosen. Hugo had a passion for training, mentoring, and supporting physicians and researchers. It is in this spirit that his friends and loved ones embarked on a fundraising campaign to celebrate Hugo’s life and memory which will fund the AASLD Foundation’s work to build a diverse pipeline of future liver practitioners and provide critical research funding, career development opportunities and essential training to the next generation of researchers and clinicians.

The Vinay Sundaram Legacy Fund

This fund was established in honor of the late Dr. Vinay Sundaram to memorialize his legacy as a distinguished physician-scientist and leader in hepatology, a generous mentor, a doting father and husband, devoted brother, and a dear friend. Dr. Sundaram was a pioneer in acute on chronic liver disease research and an amazing clinician at his transplant hepatology practice at Cedars-Sinai.
